Categories vary within the publishing community. April Wenzel categorizes as follows:

Flash Fiction: any fiction story with a  word count of 1,000 or less.

Short Story: any fiction story with a word count between 1,001 and 7,500.

Novelette: any fiction story with a word count between 7,501 and 17,500.

Novella: any fiction story with a word count between 17,501 and 40,000.

Short Novel: any fiction story with a word count between 40,001 and 50,000.

Novel: any fiction story with a word count of 50,001 or more.
